DIY Tree Resin Candle: Montana Forest Aromatherapy
Lighting a candle that smells like a real mountain forest is incredibly cozy, especially when you are looking to unwind after a long day. If you love the earthy scent of the Montana woods, making your own tree resin candle is the perfect way to bring a piece of that wild energy indoors. It captures that authentic outdoor vibe perfectly, all without the fancy store-bought brands. Plus, the whole process is surprisingly simple, and the crackle of a wood wick feels like a mini campfire right in your living room.
Why Make Your Own Tree Resin Candle?
Store-bought candles often contain paraffin wax and artificial fragrances that release soot and chemicals. By crafting your own, you get a clean, eco-friendly burn that keeps your air fresh. Plus, using wild-foraged resin adds a deeply authentic, rustic scent you simply cannot buy at the store.

Step-by-Step Instructions:
What You Need (for 8oz candle):
- 2 cups Soy Wax
- 1-2 tbsp Tree Resin
- 20 drops Bergamot Essential Oil
- 10 drops Neroli Oil
- 10 drops Jasmine Oil
- Double boiler
- Heat-resilient container (glass jar or tin works perfectly)
- Wood wick and wick sticker (you can use cotton wick if you want to)
- Candle scissors (for trimming the wick)
- Cheesecloth (to strain the resin)
How to:
Stick your wood wick to the bottom center of your heat-resilient container using the wick sticker.
Melt the tree resin in a double boiler. Carefully pour the liquid resin through the cheesecloth into a clean, heat-safe bowl to remove any bark or dirt.
Mix your soy wax and the clean resin, and heat them together until completely melted.
Remove the mixture from the heat and let it cool down to around 135°F to 140°F. (if the wax is too hot, your beautiful essential oils will just evaporate.) Once your thermometer hits that temperature, gently stir in your essential oils for about a minute so they bind perfectly with the wax.
Pour the wax into your jar. Let it harden overnight, then trim the wick (about 1/8 to 3/16 inch = 3 to 5 mm above the surface of the wax) with your candle scissors before lighting.
