Historically, this lush valley was a favorite residence for powerful aliʻi (chiefs), including the great ancient ruler Kākuhihewa, and it was the birthplace of chief Kualiʻi. The area was filled with sacred sites, including heiau (temples) and extensive agricultural terraces.
This valley is also famous for the legend of the Huakaʻi Pō (the Night Marchers). In Hawaiian folklore, the Night Marchers are the ghostly, armed spirits of ancient Hawaiian warriors who travel the islands at night, walking strictly along the old pathways to visit sacred sites or escort high-ranking chiefs. It is said that if you hear the beating of their drums or see their torches moving through the valley, you must lay face down on the ground in total silence to show respect and avoid their wrath.

My Personal Experience Hiking Maunawili Falls Trail
This is honestly one of my favorite waterfall hikes on Oahu! You can actually jump off the rocks and swim in the waterfalls, which feels incredibly refreshing after a long, muddy trek. Do not worry—the water is deep enough to jump into safely! There is also a gorgeous hidden bridge and a natural moss slide that I really wanted to find, and I actually did. The moss slide works just like a real natural waterslide. I love those little hidden gems. I am so into exploring new places and discovering secret spots out on the trails.
