Mauna Lahilahi — A Short Adventurous Hike with Gorgeous 360° Ocean Views

If you are looking for a quick but super adventurous hike on the West Side of Oʻahu, you have to check out Mauna Lahilahi. It is a very short climb, but it gives you a fun rock scramble and absolutely incredible ocean views. It is the perfect spot to catch a sunset or just enjoy the beautiful coastline away from the big tourist crowds.

Hawaiian Folklore

In the Hawaiian language, Mauna Lahilahi translates to “thin mountain.” When you look at its sharp, narrow ridge sticking out by the ocean, the name makes total sense! According to true Hawaiian folklore, this small mountain was very sacred to Kāne, the god of creation and life, as well as ʻAiʻai, the god of fishermen. Because it sits right on the water, ancient Hawaiians also used the peak as a lookout point to spot approaching canoes and keep a close eye on the Waiʻanae coast.

Where is Kuliʻouʻou Ridge Trail Located?

Tips for Hiking Mauna Lahilahi

  • Bring sun protection (absolutely no shade, so if you do not want to get a tan or a sunburn, make sure to bring a hat and sunscreen).

  • Remember your path (there is no actual clear path! – make sure you remember the rock features as you hike up so you can find your way back down).

  • Do not leave trash on the trails (Mālama ʻĀina, Aloha ʻĀina)

My Personal Experience Hiking Mauna Lahilahi

I have hiked this trail many times to see the beautiful 360-degree ocean view and the sunset. When I hiked it for the first time, I actually got kind of lost on the way back! I had no idea which way to get down the rocks because I didn’t pay attention to the trail features at all, and I am still not good at remembering directions. Since it is a really short hike, it is not a big deal if you do not remember the exact same path you took to hike up, but it is always better to remember some rock features you can easily recognize. Personally, I love the West Side of Oʻahu, and there is a beach really close to this trail, so I highly recommend hiking Mauna Lahilahi. You will love the view for sure! Sometimes it is really nice figuring out the path by yourself instead of following an already existing trail. It makes hiking more adventurous and exciting.

Mauna Lahilahi is such a unique little mountain that gives you a fun workout and even better views. Since you get to figure out your own way to the top, every climb feels like a brand-new adventure. Bring your sunscreen, take your time on the rocks, and get ready to enjoy one of the best sunset spots on the entire West Side!
