Lanikai Pillbox — 30min Hike to Heavenly Ocean Views

If you are looking for one of the most famous and breathtaking views on the entire island, the Lanikai Pillbox hike is exactly where you want to be. This short but steep dirt trail takes you high up above the windward coast, rewarding you with picture-perfect ocean scenery. It is a fantastic way to kick off your morning and get a great workout in before hitting the sand for the rest of the day.

Hawaiian Folklore & History

While everyone calls it the Lanikai Pillbox, the true Hawaiian name for this trail is the Kaʻiwa Ridge Trail. In Hawaiian folklore, Kaʻiwa translates to “the frigate bird” (the ‘iwa bird), a magnificent seabird known for gliding beautifully on the ocean winds around the island.

The name “Lanikai” translates to “heavenly sea.” Interestingly, this name was actually made up by a developer in the 1920s to describe the insanely blue waters below! Also, pillboxes are historic military observation bunkers that were built in 1943 during World War II so soldiers could keep a close watch over the coast.

  • Bring plenty of Water

  • Check the weather (the weather out here is always changing, and if it has been raining, the steep dirt path gets extremely slick and muddy).

  • Do not leave trash on the trails (Mālama ʻĀina, Aloha ʻĀina)

We recommend checking the recent reviews by others and the weather on AllTrails before going on hike so you can prepare!

My Personal Experience Hiking Lanikai Pillbox

I used to always see photos of Lanikai on social media, and I wanted to go so badly. I still remember how amazed I was by the view from the top when I hiked it for the very first time. The scenery is truly incredible!

My absolute favorite thing to do is go to Boots & Kimo’s Homestyle Kitchen early in the morning for breakfast (I am obsessed with their omelets and their famous macadamia nut pancakes). After that, I head over to hike the Lanikai Pillbox. Then, I love grabbing an acai bowl somewhere in town and just laying out to relax on Lanikai or Kailua Beach. If you have an entire day free in the Kailua area, I highly recommend doing this exact routine!

The Lanikai Pillbox is simply a classic Oahu experience that you cannot skip. Even though the steep dirt climb will make you sweat, the sweeping views of the heavenly sea and the twin islands make every single step worth it. Start your day early, grab some amazing local food, and enjoy one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world!
