Electric Beach — Finding the Hidden Buddha and Hawaiian Wildlife

If you love exploring the underwater world, you have to check out Electric Beach. Officially known as Kahe Point, this spot is an absolute gem for freedivers and snorkelers alike. With its warm, clear waters and abundant marine life, it’s the perfect place to spend a morning floating in the beautiful Hawaiian ocean.

Where is Electric Beach Located?

  • On the west side of Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi: right across from Hawaiian Electric Kahe Power Plant.

What Makes Electric Beach So Special?

The main attraction here is the power plant’s clean water cooling pipe offshore. It pumps warm water back into the ocean, which acts like a magnet for marine life! You will find massive schools of tropical fish hanging out in the warm currents. Keep an eye out for colorful local favorites like Moorish Idols, Butterflyfish, Convict Tangs, and Parrotfish. Hawaiian green sea turtles love to cruise around here, too.

There is also a fun little secret hiding underwater: a small Buddha statue! It is tucked away and kind of hard to find, but searching for it makes for a really fun underwater treasure hunt.

Marine Animals You Might Encounter:

  • Hawaiian spinner dolphins
  • Hawaiian green sea turtles
  • Hawaiian monk seals
  • Whitetip reef sharks
  • Manta rays (this is rare, but definitely still possible!)

The wildlife at Electric Beach is incredible!

Important Wildlife Regulations: Hawaii’s marine animals are highly protected, and yes, both the Hawaiian monk seal and the Hawaiian green sea turtle are endangered species. Here are the rules you absolutely need to follow:

  • Keep your distance: You must stay at least 50ft (15m) away from Hawaiian monk seals, 50 yards (150ft / 46m) from Hawaiian spinner dolphins, and 10ft away from sea turtles.

  • No chasing: Never chase, touch, or swim directly at the animals.

  • Enforcement: NOAA (the ocean authorities) actively patrol these areas to protect the animals, and they even use drones to monitor the water from above. Respecting these creatures keeps them safe and keeps you out of trouble!

Tips for Diving at Electric Beach

  • Arrive early (this is a very popular spot for both diving and snorkeling, and the parking lot is small).

  • Check the waves (before you get in, watch the shorebreak).

  • Know your limits (if the waves are up, you need to be a very strong swimmer to push through the constant surf to get to the diving spot).

**If you aren’t confident, I simply do not recommend getting in. A friend of mine who was a beginner diver really struggled to get over the crashing waves and actually gave up on diving that day. The ocean is no joke, so always prioritize your safety!**

My Personal Experience

Electric Beach is honestly one of my absolute favorite freediving spots. I have been lucky enough to encounter every single marine animal I listed above. I’ve visited this spot so many times, but I’ve only seen a manta ray once—it was incredibly lucky and such an awesome surprise!

If you enjoy shell hunting, there are lots of tiny, beautiful shells scattered around the ocean floor here. Just be sure to check that there is nothing alive inside before you decide to keep one.

A little bit further away from the main power plant pipe, there is a shallow rocky reef area with a small cave. One time, a Hawaiian monk seal was hanging out inside the cave and completely surprised me when I dove down to explore! They look incredibly chill and cute, but they are an endangered species and can be aggressive if they feel threatened. I’ve never been attacked or chased by one, but it’s so important to respect their space and keep your distance if you cross paths.

If you want to swim alongside some of the most amazing marine life in the world, I genuinely recommend checking out Electric Beach. It offers a little bit of everything—from warm water and tropical fish to hidden statues and unforgettable wildlife encounters. Just remember to respect the ocean, give the animals their space, and dive safely!
