Crouching Lion Trail — 15min Intense Climb on the Windward Coast

The Crouching Lion trail is a short, intense, and incredibly rewarding hike on the beautiful east side of Oʻahu. Right from the very first step, the dirt path goes straight up the mountain, taking you through thick jungle and over tree roots. It is a tough physical challenge that will definitely make you sweat, but you are quickly rewarded with some of the most breathtaking coastline scenery on the island.

Hawaiian Folklore

While Westerners named this landmark the “Crouching Lion” because of its shape, the true Hawaiian name for this rock formation is Kauhi (short for Kauhiʻīmakaokalani). In Hawaiian folklore, Kauhi was a powerful demigod from Tahiti. Ancient Hawaiians had never seen a lion, so they actually saw the rock as an ʻīlio ha, or a large-headed dog.

According to legend, Kauhi was bound to the mountain cliff. When the goddess Hiʻiaka traveled through the area and sang a beautiful chant, Kauhi tried to stand up to greet her. He only made it into a crouching position before he was turned to stone, where he remains today, proudly watching over the bay.

Tips for Hiking Kaʻena Point

  • Bring enough Water (even though the hike is short, the intense incline and humidity will make you sweat heavily).

  • Wear good grip shoes (I usually wear slippers for hike in Hawaʻi especially if itʻs a short hike, but I highly recommend wearing shoes for this hike!!)

  • Mentally prepare for a really steep hike (it is a severe, steep climb right from the beginning, so be ready to use your hands to pull yourself up over the roots and rocks).

  • Do not leave trash on the trails (Mālama ʻĀina, Aloha ʻĀina)

My Personal Experience Hiking Kaʻena Point

This trail was actually the very first one I hiked when I got to Hawaiʻi! A local friend took me, and I honestly did not expect it to be so steep. At that time, I wasn’t a hiker at all, so I definitely wasn’t ready for that kind of intense incline—it felt like it hurt my heart, haha! Even though it is a really short trail, it is incredibly intense. The beautiful ocean from the top made it totally worth it, though.

After you conquer this hike, I highly recommend driving over to the Waiahole Poi Factory for lunch! I absolutely love their Hawaiian food combo plate with Kalua pork, laulau, poi, and haupia (a sweet coconut dessert).

Crouching Lion is the perfect adventure if you want a fast, heart-pumping challenge wrapped in fascinating Hawaiian history. The steep, muddy climb will definitely test your lungs, but the sweeping ocean panorama at the top is something you will never forget. Lace up your shoes with the best grip, take your time on the slippery roots, and go earn that delicious post-hike Hawaiian lunch!
